Novel Hybrid Polymer Brushes with Alternating Dendritic Wedges and Linear Side Chains

Abstract: Summary: Novel hybrid polymer brushes with alternating dendritic wedge and linear chain as side chains were reported in this paper. Firstly, dendronized polymer initiators of generation one to three, GnMIBr (n = 1, 2, 3), were synthesized through the alternating copolymerization of styryl dendrons and maleimide derivative initiated by AIBN. The linear side chains were then generated through grafting‐from approach using ATRP of tBA initiated with the above‐mentioned macroinitiators. By combining such macromonom… Show more

“…Numerous synthetic methods have been developed for the synthesis of well‐defined dendronized polymers in recent years. They can be classified in three categories based on how the dendritic moieties are attached on the linear backbones, namely, “grafting from,”22, 33–37 “grafting onto,”38–41 and “grafting through”23–25, 28, 30, 42–56 as the most popular strategy. Beneficial from lately developed synthetic organic methods, like “click chemistry”42 and living radical polymerizations, dendritic polymers with various architectures, like gradient, block, alternative copolymers, and functionalities, have been explored.…”

“…As such grafts include two types of polymer graft chains, their possible topologies can be divided into three types, namely, dual-brush or block type (1-5), Janus-like or prototype (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11), and double-cylinder type (12)(13)(14)(15). Polymer brushes with two different grafts distributed along the backbone have great scientific significance.…”

“…For other applications, the unique combination of linear and dendritic copolymers was first described in the beginning of 1990s by the group of Fréchet [32][33][34]. Subsequently, other research groups have developed block [35][36][37], star [38,39], linearly alternating lineardendrimer hybrid architectures [34], crosslinked superstructures [40], and brush-like polymers with dendritic side chains [41][42][43]. These resulting linear-dendritic hybrids showed very interesting properties in terms of self-assembly, enhanced solubility and reduced toxicity and immunogenicity [33,44].…”
