Novel light-emitting clays with structural Tb3+ and Eu3+ for chromate anion detection

Abstract: For the first time, Tb3+ and Eu3+ were incorporated into the framework of synthetic saponite by a one-pot hydrothermal procedure, obtaining luminescent materials with interesting photophysical properties, exploited for the fluorescent sensing of the chromate anion in water.

“…The material exhibited noteworthy photophysical features, due to the occurrence of a Tb 3+ −Eu 3+ energy transfer mechanism, and interesting detection properties for chromate anions in water. 21 The one-pot preparation of the inorganic framework shows important advantages with respect to the post-synthesis intercalation, such as low production costs, shorter synthesis times, and high chemical stability, due to the lack of lanthanide leaching.…”

“…With the advancement of the chromium plating, electroplating, and leather tanning industries, an increasing number of dichromates (Cr 2 O 7 2– ) are released into the environment, which poses a serious threat to the safety of the environment and human health, thus causing widespread concern. , In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) specifies a limit of 100 ppb for Cr 2 O 7 2– in water . Therefore, to effectively monitor and control Cr 2 O 7 2– in environmental media, it is urgent to develop a fast and convenient Cr 2 O 7 2– detection method.…”

“…Particularly, synthetic saponites can be easily modified to have different particle size and chemical composition of the lamellae and of the interlayer space, achieved by choosing specific synthetic one-pot and post-synthesis procedures [39]. Lanthanides such as Gd 3+ , Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ were included both in the form of complexes through intercalation procedures [41,42], and as ions by adding them in the clay synthesis gel [43][44][45], thus obtaining novel layered materials through a modified one-pot hydrothermal procedure in which the metal ions are directly placed in structural positions. This procedure, compared to post-synthesis intercalation, has the advantage to limit the production costs, reduce the synthesis times and increase the chemical stability of the modified material.…”
