Novel Method for Rapid Assessment of Cognitive Impairment Using High-Performance Eye-Tracking Technology

Abstract: A rapid increase in the number of patients with dementia has emerged as a global health challenge. Accumulating evidence suggests that early diagnosis and timely intervention can delay cognitive decline. The diagnosis of dementia is commonly performed using neuropsychological tests, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), administered by trained examiners. While these traditional neuropsychological tests are valid and reliable, they are neither simple nor sufficiently short as routine screening tools… Show more

“…The amount of time spent observing the new item, compared to that spent on the old item, is recorded and the preference for the new item is calculated as the novelty preference (NP) score (Zola et al, 2000 ; Lagun et al, 2011 ). Healthy controls tend to concentrate disproportionately more on the novel aspects of the environment (Haque et al, 2019 ; Jiang et al, 2019 ; Oyama et al, 2019 ). In the VPC tasks, the expected normal performance is that the subjects spend more time looking at new pictures than the old ones.…”

“…Device-based eye tracking is widely used to quantify the gaze of an individual, much like a physician assessing eye movements at the bedside. Estimation performed by eye tracking is pertinent to various fields of medicine and clinical research including ophthalmology 10,11 , psychiatry 12 , psychology 13 , psychopharmacology 14 , and neurology [15][16][17][18] . Depending on the use case scenario, researchers may opt to deploy either wearable devices or screen based platforms to estimate eye movements.…”

“…Literacy and education effects on cognitive scores due to the high linguistic demands of instructions, lack of reproducibility due to the assessor's subjectivity bias and ecological validity of some cognitive domains (e.g. social cognition) are further potential confounding factors [2].…”

“…Recent studies suggest that eye-tracking-based cognitive assessment might ameliorate some of the existing problems as it enables a brief and quantitative evaluation of cognitive functions [2]- [4]. Eye-tracking technology provides fine-grained information regarding oculomotor information (pupil dilation and gaze) and has been used to uncover eye movement abnormalities in different dementia syndromes [4], [5].…”
