Novel Operation Strategy to Obtain a Fast Gas Sensor for Continuous ppb-Level NO2 Detection at Room Temperature Using ZnO—A Concept Study with Experimental Proof

Abstract: A novel sensor operation concept for detecting ppb-level NO2 concentrations at room temperature is introduced. Today’s research efforts are directed to make the sensors as fast as possible (low response and recovery times). Nevertheless, hourly mean values can hardly be precisely calculated, as the sensors are still too slow and show baseline drifts. Therefore, the integration error becomes too large. The suggested concept follows exactly the opposite path. The sensors should be made as slow as possible and op… Show more

“…The operating temperature represents an important parameter for all types of MOXbased gas sensors due to its activation role played during surface gas-sensing phenomena. The bell-like behavior depicted in Figure 4a can be explained by the balance between the activation energy required to oxidize CO to CO2 versus the fast desorption rate of weakly bonded CO at the surface of NiO [23,24]. Generally, the presence of moisture in the ambient atmosphere has a strong influence on the CO detection.…”

“…These are specifically attractive due to their low cost, facile fabrication, miniature size, and high sensitivity to diverse target gases [23]. In these semiconductor materials, oxygen (in reaction with the target gas) is adsorbed at the surface, generating electrical charges that change the impedance of the metal oxide layer [24]. The chemisorption process is generally catalysed by high temperature [21,25].…”

“…For air quality control the detection of the hourly mean values or the total amount (dose) of NO2 over a certain time interval are important. The working principle of a dosimeter-type NO2 sensor operating at room temperature is described in [1] and [2]. The gas dosimeter detects the total dose of NO2, i.e., the timely integration of the concentration over a certain time span, directly.…”
