Novel optimal control strategy for power fluctuation and current harmonic suppression of a three-phase photovoltaic inverter under unbalanced grid faults

Abstract: Summary Under unbalanced grid faults, the output currents of a photovoltaic (PV) system injected into the grid lose their sinusoidal and balanced appearance. The interaction between such unbalanced currents and voltages leads to fluctuations in active and reactive powers. This study investigates the instantaneous output power characteristics of a PV inverter and its flexible power control strategy under unbalanced grid faults. A new optimal parameter model of power control is established to generate minimal in… Show more

“…Electrical power system is a highly complex and dynamic entity which cannot be exempt from fault . The PVs contributing to the fault current during a fault make protection system very vulnerable because of impacts of PV systems on distribution feeders . A feeder without PV has low fault current profiles whereas, that subject to high penetration of PV systems presents considerable fault current profiles .…”

“…Performance and convergence rate constraints are imposed on the design to enhance transient responses and dynamic behavior. Parameter selection guidelines are also given. During asymmetrical voltage sags, real power delivered to the grid is kept constant, and the injected currents are kept sinusoidal without requiring a PLL or the PN sequence components of unbalanced voltages or currents that are generally employed under unbalanced conditions and to keep real power injection constant during grid support . This leads to a significant reduction in computational complexity and design requirements of the control strategy.…”
