Novel perspectives on swept-source optical coherence tomography

Abstract: Technologies for multimodal digital imaging of vitreoretinal diseases have improved the accuracy of diagnosis and the depth of the knowledge of the mechanisms of disease and their response to treatments. Optic coherence tomography (OCT) has become a mandatory tool for the management and for the follow-up of retinal pathologies. OCT technology evolved in the last two decades from time-domain to spectral domain and recently to the swept-source OCTs (SS-OCT). SS-OCT improved the depth of imaging and the scan spee… Show more

“…Poor deep-tissue visibility and shadow artifacts [21] in OCT images as a result of light attenuation makes the development of robust segmentation tools difficult. With the advent of swept-source OCT [22], enhanced depth imaging [23,24,25] and compensation technology [26] the quality of OCT images has been improved, opening the door to new possibilities. Recently, our group has developed a post-processing technique that, when combined with compensation, could digitally-stain (highlight) neural and connective tissues in OCT images of the ONH.…”

“…The longer wavelengths and sweptsource laser result in better penetration into deeper ocular tissues for high-quality images of these structures. 30 In sweptsource optical coherence tomography, the suprachoroidal layer is seen as a hyperreflective line below the hypo-reflective large choroidal vessels, but above a slightly hyper-reflective sclera ( Figure 2).…”

“…Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has dramatically changed the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of many vitreo-retinal diseases [1][2][3]. One of the most recent developments of this technology is the intraoperative OCT (iOCT).…”
