Novel Polymers with Inherent Conductivity and Enhanced Second‐Order NLO Activity

Abstract: A new polythiophene derivative bearing an azobenzene substituent at the end of a ethylenic side‐chain was synthesized and characterized by FT‐IR spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, DSC, TGA, XRD, and UV‐vis spectroscopy. Its electrical conductivity was measured and its second‐order NLO activity was by SHG. Structure‐property relations were elucidated by comparison with a similar polymer only partially substituted by the NLO‐active chromophore. The molecular design of the chromophoric system allows high … Show more

“…In our recent work,10 we explored the second‐order nonlinear properties of poled films of Pol‐PZ‐CN , finding a restriction on the poling efficiency arising from the tendency of the NLO–chromophores to aggregate. This problem is especially important in chromophores that have a large dipole moment, and it has been discussed by several authors both in guest–host11–15 and side‐chain polymers 16, 17. As we described in Ref 10,.…”

“…This problem is especially important in chromophores that have a large dipole moment, and it has been discussed by several authors both in guest-host [11][12][13][14][15] and side-chain polymers. [16,17] As we described in Ref. [10] , light pre-irradiation of the samples at a suitable wavelength improves the nonlinear optical response of the polymer.…”

“…The diffraction peak d 1 is assigned to the side-to-side distance between the conjugated main chains separated by the long side chains, as reported from those of other similar p-conjugated polymers with long side chains. [32][33][34][35] The d 2 peak is assigned to the second-order peak of d 1 (d 2 ¼ d 1 /2). Note the alkyl chains on the TTF units of P 1 -TTF are longer than that of P 2 -TTF.…”

“…Azobenzene‐based compounds have shown wide applications in nonlinear optics because of their special electronic structures, and achieving novel field‐responsive materials basis on azobenzene unit has always been a topical issue in theory . Benefited from the rapid development of theory and computer technology, one can rationally design nonlinear optical (NLO) molecules with large optical responses for practical applications.…”
