Novel Prognostic Immunohistochemical Markers in Uveal Melanoma-Literature Review

Abstract: Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular neoplasm in adults. As there are currently no effective methods of treating the disease in the metastatic stage, there is a need to search for new prognostic factors that would enable a reliable assessment of the patient’s condition and constitute a possible therapeutic target. In this review, we have prepared the results of English-language studies on new prognostic factors determined with immunohistochemical methods. We found 64 articles in which the expr… Show more

“…The potential prognostic value of various kinds of protein expression by immunohistochemistry has been explored. 45 Nuclear BAP1 immunostaining showed a significant correlation with the survival rate of UM cases. 46 Our study indicates that PTK2 protein expression may be a prognostic factor in UM and used to predict patient prognosis.…”

“…Currently, there is no effective pharmacological treatment for patients with UM and the research on new biomarkers, which can serve as a prognostic factors or a potential target in anti‐cancer therapy may be crucial for favorable long‐term survival for UM patients (Gajdzis et al, 2021). The proteins, such as adiponectin, CD147, c‐Met, COX‐2, EGFR, and others were identified previously as possible useful prognostic markers in UM (Gajdzis et al, 2021). However, despite these results, the identification of new prognostic tissue markers for UM is still a significant challenge for the scientific community.…”

“…For instance, loss of nuclear BAP1 staining was linked to an 8-fold higher risk of developing metastases [31]. Malgorzata et al focused exclusively on biomarkers assessed through IHC, reporting 55 of such molecules that correlate with a multitude of clinicopathological parameters and affecting patients' outcome [32].…”
