Novel radio-frequency quadrupole ion trap with spherical geometry

Abstract: Confinement of single ions in a novel radio-frequency (RF) quadrupole ion trap with spherical shape is investigated. An optimization of this spherical ion trap (SIT) is carried out in order to suppress its nonlinearity substantially by eliminating the electric octupole moment. Hence, a trapping potential and consequently an electric field very similar to the ideal quadrupole ion trap (QIT) are obtained. Afterwards, three stability regions for the optimized SIT are numerically computed. The regions coincide wel… Show more

“…4 This kind of trap with hyperbolic geometry has a simple mathematical formalism, for which the dynamical behavior of ions can be properly described by the well-known Mathieu differential equations. [7][8][9] As a main disadvantage of a Paul trap, one can indicate the difficulty of its construction due to the hyperbolic shape of the electrodes. 10 Another disadvantage of a practical Paul trap can be attributed to the appearance of multipole electric field components caused by truncation of the hyperbolic-shaped electrodes.…”

“…[13][14][15][16][17][18] For instance, one of the recent studies has proposed a novel radio-frequency ion trap with spherical geometry. 7 In this article, in order to design a cylindrical ion trap (CIT), which behaves very similar to a pure QIT, a specific diameter to height ratio has been computed.…”
