Novel Real-Time PCR Assays Using TaqMan Minor Groove Binder Probes for Identification of Fecal Carriage of Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus Complex from Rectal Swab Specimens

Abstract: bReal-time PCR based on the recN and gyrB genes was developed to detect four Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBEC) subspecies from rectal swab specimens. The overall prevalence was 35.2%: Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (11.1%), S. gallolyticus subsp. pasteurianus (13%), Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli (20.4%), and S. infantarius subsp. infantarius (11.1%). To conclude, these real-time PCR assays provide a reliable molecular method to detect SBEC pathogenic subspecies fr… Show more

“…The prevalence reported for Sii in this study was similar to 11% Sii prevalence determined for rectal swabs of colonoscopy patients in Brazil using a qPCR assay ( Lopes et al, 2014 ). In contrast, general SBSEC prevalence in France was reported at 6% for normal colonoscopy ( Chirouze et al, 2013 ).…”

“…There is no gold standard serological assay available to validate the newly developed SGG multiplex serology. However, the distribution of MFI measured to individual SGG proteins among controls reflected the low fecal carriage rate of SGG among the healthy population, which in cross‐sectional studies ranged between 1% to 11%: MFI values obtained with SGG proteins were low as compared to Polyomavirus JC VP1 (Supporting Information Fig. S1).…”
