Novel Semiconducting Polymer Particles by Supercritical Fluid Process

Abstract: Summary: A simple method to prepare surfactant‐free and solvent‐free semiconducting polymer particles by using an environmentally benign supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) process is reported. The process of the rapid expansion of supercritical solutions (RESS) is used to produce spherical particles of poly[2‐(3‐thienyl)acetyl 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8‐tridecafluorooctanoate] (PSFTE), 50–500 nm in size, from 0.1–0.5 wt.‐% PSFTE solutions in CO2 at pre‐expansion temperatures of 40 °C and pre‐expansion pressur… Show more

“…PVDF applications exploiting piezoelectric properties in special devices like sensors, capacitors or actuators are highly interesting. 35 The rapid expansion of supercritical solutions (RESS) is usually applied to the micronization of pharmaceuticals, such as carbamazepine. 18 So far, the electrical properties of PVDF have mainly been investigated in polymer lms.…”

“…[30][31][32][33][34] In addition to polymerization under supercritical conditions, even the production of semiconducting polymer particles has been reported in scCO 2 . 35 The rapid expansion of supercritical solutions (RESS) is usually applied to the micronization of pharmaceuticals, such as carbamazepine. 36 It is also known that carbamazepine crystal phase conversion is enabled by using scCO 2 .…”

“…At this point, the supercritical solution is now allowed to expand through the nozzle, at ambient pressure. The concentration and degree of saturation of the polymer have a considerable effect on the particle size and morphology of the particles for RESS (Blasig A. et al, 2002, Chernyak Y. et al, 2001, Lim K.T. et al, 2005, Sane A. and Thies M.C., 2007).…”

“…It has several advantages including gas-like viscosity, liquid-like density, zero surface tension and can be easily removed without leaving any residues in the composite materials [22]. In our previous studies, the green synthesis of semi-conducting polymers/composites and a series of block copolymers were reported by using scCO 2 as a feasible reaction medium [23][24][25].…”
