Novel solid‐phase microextraction fiber coatings: A review

Abstract: The materials used for the fabrication of solid-phase microextraction fiber coatings in the past five years are summarized in the current review, including carbon, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, aerogel, polymer, ionic liquids/poly (ionic liquids), metal oxides, and natural materials. The preparation approaches of different coatings, such as sol-gel technique, in-situ growth, electrodeposition, and glue methods, are briefly reviewed together with the evolution of the supporting substrat… Show more

“…13 The selectivity and sensitivity of SPME bers have a direct bearing on the materials coated on bers. 14 Newer materials used for ber coatings include porous polydivinylbenzene microspheres, 15 metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, 16 The HS-SPME sampling of materials of low volatility was meticulously solved by a gas-cycle-assisted system that is designed to enhance the evaporation rates of analytes from their matrix. 17 Single-drop microextraction (SDME) makes use of a single drop suspended at the needle tip placed either immersed in the sample solution or in its headspace.…”

“…Hence, the sorbent plays a key role in determining the extraction efficiency and selectivity of SPME. Although many commercial and self‐made coatings have been broadly applied in SPME [1316], the firmness of the coatings on the fiber is still a significant challenge due to the lack of strong force between the coatings and the fiber. Among the developed coating preparation methods, the physical preparation methods are often considered to have a lack of strong force between the coating and the fiber, resulting in coatings falling off from the fiber during thermal desorption and solvent desorption.…”

“…[ 27 ] Porous frame materials feature great potential as SPME coating material because of large specific surface area, low density, easy functionalization, and modification. [ 28 ] Among them, hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a novel and promising class of porous frame materials. HOFs are self‐assembled from organic monomers with electron donors and acceptors by intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interactions.…”
