“…13 Comparision between S. cerevisae and T. cruzi components of mRNA export coupled to transcription/splicing. The figure contains the major components of S. cerevisiae as described on Kohler and Hurt (2007) ( 130 ) and Kramer (2021) ( 47 ). To simplify, components of Peripheral Nuclear Granules and Nuclear Pore Complex are omitted.…”

“…Although many components of the RNA export machinery are known from animals, fungi, plants, and other organisms, in silico identification of components in trypanosomatid genomes is unreliable due to high divergence and few proteins appear conserved or recognizable ( 46 ). In fact, several nuclear complexes and nuclear-pore-associated proteins that play major roles in mRNA export in opisthokonts are lacking in trypanosomes, and a recent comparative review described the main differences in nuclear mRNA maturation and mRNA export ( 47 ). While UAP56/Sub2 ( 48 ) and TAP/Mex67 ( 49 , 50 , 51 ) are essential for mRNA transport in trypanosomes, little else has been identified with significant roles ( 49 , 51 , 52 , 53 ).…”

“…The only other DExD/H RNA helicase that has been identified in the context of rRNA maturation in trypanosomes is Mtr4 30 . Mtr4 localises to the nucleoplasm 39 and is likely to be part of the TRAMP complex and thus involved in general RNA surveillance in the nucleus together with the nuclear exosome 30,48 . Depletion of either Mtr4 or exosomal subunits cause accumulation of ribosomal precursor RNAs 30,31 .…”

“…One explores the relative conservation of mRNA biogenesis, processing and export between trypanosomes and animals and fungi. This provides a comprehensive framework of great value to anyone teaching or embarking upon the field of protozoan gene regulation, as well as those with specific interests in protist evolution (Kramer, 2021). A complementary minireview by Paris on tRNA export examines conservation of a more discrete but equally vital process (Paris, 2021).…”
