Numerical Analysis of Elastoplastic Behavior of Stone Column Foundation

Abstract: This paper deals with the influence of the earth pressure at rest coefficient K 0 on stone columns behavior. This parameter is related to the initial stresses caused by the compression of in situ soil and by the installation (expansion of column material). Numerical calculations based on finite element method are compared to analytical methods and conventional engineering methods addressed to the design of stone columns. The presented results led to a better comprehension of previous methods for the design of … Show more

“…The properties of the granular materials, presented in Table 2, are based on soil tests, on the authors' experience (Almeida et al, 2014a(Almeida et al, , 2014b(Almeida et al, , 2018 and on recommendations in the literature (Castro and Sagaseta, 2009;Six et al, 2012). The shear strength parameters and the Young modulus adopted for the stone column were determined from triaxial tests (Gebrenegus et al, 2015) for the AASHTO Nº 6 grain size distribution corresponding to crushed stone N o 2 ( ABNT NBR 7211:2009.…”

“…Stone columns are widely used to improve the foundations of many structures. Various designs of stone column are based on the axisymmetric unit cell model, in which one stone column and its equivalent circular influence zone are modeled (Priebe, 1976; Balaam and Booker, 1981; Van Impe and Madhav, 1992; Han and Ye, 2001; Tan et al , 2008; Six et al , 2012; Sexton et al , 2013; Ng and Tan, 2014; Ng and Tan, 2015; Mohanty and Samanta, 2015; Tabchouche et al , 2017; Gaber et al , 2018; Hadri et al , 2021).…”
