Numerical investigation of double-diffusive mixed convection in horizontal annulus partially filled with a porous medium

Abstract: Purpose Double-diffusive convection within a tri-dimensional in a horizontal annulus partially filled with a fluid-saturated porous medium is numerically investigated. The aim of this work is to understand the effects of a source of heat and solute on the fluid flow and heat and mass transfer rates. Design/methodology/approach In the formulation of the problem, the Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer model is adopted to the fluid flow in the porous annulus. The laminar flow regime is considered under steady state cond… Show more

“…The behavior of the fluid flow driven by a combination of temperature and solute concentration gradients is called double-diffusive convection (Gireesha et al , 2017; Rahman et al , 2017; Moderres et al , 2017; Akbar et al , 2016; Chen et al , 2013). In recent period, double-diffusive convection may appear in a wide range of scientific fields such as biology, oceanology, astrophysics, geology, chemical processes, crystal-growth techniques and the situations in which both the concentration gradient and temperature gradients are in the vertical direction (Subhashini et al , 2011; Mahdy, 2010; Nield and Kuznetsov, 2011).…”

“…This fact is called thermosolutal or double-diffusive convection. The occurrence of the double-diffusion process materializes in the field of geology, oceanography, biology, chemical processes and astrophysics, as well as in the discipline of engineering such as crystal manufacturing, metal solidification processes and natural gas storage tanks (Huppert and Turner, 1981; Pandit and Hansda, 2022; Omara et al , 2022; Moderres et al , 2017). Kumar and Murthy (2010) explored thermosolutal convection in a non-Darcian porous corrugated chamber.…”

“…The annulus geometry was studied in a few cases. Moderres et al [20], investigated numerically double-diffusive convection within a tri-dimensional in a horizontal annulus partially filled with a fluid-saturated porous medium. In their study, the average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers were presented as a function of the Lewis number, thermal Grashof number, and buoyancy ratio.…”
