Numerical Simulation of Severe Damage to a Historical Masonry Building by Soil Settlement

Esin Ertürk Atmaca,
Ali Fuat Genç,
Ahmet Can Altunişik
et al.

Abstract: Historical masonry structures, which constitute an important part of the historical heritage, exhibit brittle behavior under tensile stresses due to earthquakes or soil movements/settlements. Therefore, they are sensitive to deformation. The soil–structure interaction problems play an important role in the damage to historical masonry structures. Different settlements, slips, and deformations in foundations causes damage to, and/or partial collapse the load-bearing walls. This study provides a numerical simula… Show more

“…Numerous researchers have conducted parametric studies to investigate the interaction between the soil and surface structures [10][11][12]. Also, recent studies have compared numerical analysis results with field measurements obtained from constructed projects to analyze the SSIs [13,14]. Because of its industrialized character, the building method employing concrete walls, according to Ng et al [15], offers advantages such as a quick execution, a reduced amount of manual work required, less expensive overall costs, reduced waste generation, and efficient large-scale manufacturing.…”

“…These analyses assist engineering and architectural teams in understanding the mechanical behavior of these structures and contribute to determining appropriate strengthening and restoration strategies. Many studies have been conducted to numerically determine the structural behavior of historical structures, such as buildings [3][4][5][6], mosques [7][8][9], churches [10][11][12][13], masonry bridges [14][15], minarets, and towers [16][17][18][19] etc. Numerical studies have shown that the evaluation of the structural behavior of historical masonry structures is prevalent and effective.…”
