Numerical Simulation of Spring Hydrograph Recession Curves for East Yorkshire Chalk Aquifer, UK

Abstract: Spring hydrographs from the real aquifer were compared with the hydrographs generated from models, in order to estimate aquifer properties. The work aims to identify the utility of spring hydrographs in eliciting aquifer permeability structure, as well as identifying the conceptual scenario which best represents the Chalk Aquifer in East Yorkshire, UK.

“…In this stage, the recession behavior is expected to provide information on some intrinsic aquifer features (e.g. Azeez et al 2015;Tague and Grant 2004). One of the first studies about base-flow recession hydrographs is that of Boussinesq (1904), who proposed a nonlinear quadratic behavior of aquifer discharge during recession.…”

“…In recent times, environments with different hydrogeologic characteristics have been modelled in laboratory conditions to draw and interpret discharge curves. According to these researches, the recession curve of a spring is related to geologic and hydrologic factors like precipitation in the region, and the geology of the recharge area, along with hydrogeologic characteristics of the aquifer (e.g., porosity, permeability, transmissivity) and situations like pumping from groundwater (Kovacs and Perrochet, 2008;Liu and Li, 2012;Farlin and Maloszewski, 2013;Azeez et al, 2015).…”

“…Tampa, FL (USA) September 2020 al., 1997). Due to the high porosity of the rock matrix, the Chalk is normally considered as a dual-porosity or double-permeability aquifer (Butler et al, 2014;Azeez et al, 2015;Zghibi et al, 2016;Descamps et al, 2017;Hakoun et al, 2017). Storage is predominantly within the matrix.…”
