Numerical Study of n-Heptane Auto-ignition Using LES-PDF Methods

Abstract: This work deals with pre-vaporized n-heptane auto-ignition in turbulent flows. The paper applies the Eulerian Stochastic Field method to the solution of the sub-grid joint-scalar probability density function (PDF) of the reacting scalars in the Large Eddy Simulations (LES) context. A reduced mechanism of 22 species and 18 reactions is used to model n-heptane chemical kinetics. The method is able to reproduce the different regimes observed experimentally and studies the influence of inflow temperature fluctuati… Show more

“…The model was also proposed independently in stirred reactor studies where it is known as Interaction by Exchange with the Mean (IEM), [40]. The LMSE closure has been used previously in the LES studies of Mustata et al [25] and Jones and Navarro-Martinez [26,28,41]. Thus the final term in equation (13) is replaced by:…”

“…The results to be described have been obtained within European Project [25] in collaboration with Rolls Royce Germany, who provided details of the combustor and fuel injector geometries, the spark ignitor and the kerosene and air flow rates. Large Eddy Simulations were carried out using an in-house block-structured, parallel, boundary conforming coordinate LES code, BOFFIN-LES [33], further details of which can be found in Jones and Navarro-Martinez [31]. Due to very limited amount of experimental data available the results presented are essentially qualitative in nature.…”
