Numerical study of tides in the Bay of Sabang

Abstract: This study aims to observe tidal sea behavior in Bay of Sabang by using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model. The research domain was obtained from SRTM15, which had been interpolated so that it has a spatial resolution Δx = Δy = 0.1 minutes (185 meters). As a generator force, the open boundaries model is given five main tidal components (M2, S2, K1, N2, O1) obtained from TPXO 7.2 data. The model is simulated for 31 days with time step based on CFL condition criteria. Our model verification is quite good when … Show more

“…Uncertainties related to water line variations (tides and river stage) were assessed using field observations along the shoreline, which exhibits a foreshore beach slope of 8% to 10%, and field observations along the Aceh River banks. The mean tidal range in front of the Aceh delta is approximately < 1 m (Wahyudi et al, 2019) and translates into a 1.25 m uncertainty in the location of the coastal water line. Because the comparison of planform outlines between two dates (i.e., fluvial channel widths, lengths and ridge widths) does not require spatial overlaying, no uncertainty associated to georeferencing is introduced in these calculations, in which only the inaccuracies related to digitizing and water level variations are combined.…”

“…The rainy season (monsoon) peaks in November and December, with 300 mm of precipitation per month (Bennett et al, 1981). Tides are semi-diurnal and have a mean amplitude of 1 m (Wahyudi et al, 2019), with minimum neap tides of 0.4 m and maximum Spring tides of 1.6 m (Wahyudi et al, 2019). Along the delta shoreface, swell generates long-shore sediment drift toward the northeast (Diposaptono & Mano, 1998).…”

“…In addition, the tidal type in Weh waters tends predominantly semidiurnal because the amplitude of the M2 component (semidiurnal) is larger than the K1 component (diurnal). According to study by [24] and [1] the tidal pattern in Aceh waters is semidiurnal and mixed tide predominantly semidiurnal.…”

“…The circulation pattern on the tidal time-scale at a depth of 40 meters in the area around the ridge varies according to the tidal conditions. Tidal forcing from the Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, and Andaman Sea controls the tidal dynamics of Weh waters [1]. During high tide conditions (Figure 10a), the tidal current flows northeastward and eastward at velocity of 4-7 m/s.…”
