Background Intelligent physical robots based on artificial intelligence have been argued to bring about dramatic changes in health care services. Previous research has examined the use of intelligent physical robots in the health care context from different perspectives; however, an overview of the antecedents and consequences of intelligent physical robot use in health care is lacking in the literature. Objective In this paper, we aimed to provide an overview of the antecedents and consequences of intelligent physical robot use in health care and to propose potential agendas for future research through a systematic literature review. Methods We conducted a systematic literature review on intelligent physical robots in the health care field following the guidelines of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Literature searches were conducted in 5 databases (PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL) in May 2021, focusing on studies using intelligent physical robots for health care purposes. Subsequently, the quality of the included studies was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. We performed an exploratory content analysis and synthesized the findings extracted from the included articles. Results A total of 94 research articles were included in the review. Intelligent physical robots, including mechanoid, humanoid, android, and animalistic robots, have been used in hospitals, nursing homes, mental health care centers, laboratories, and patients’ homes by both end customers and health care professionals. The antecedents for intelligent physical robot use are categorized into individual-, organization-, and robot-related factors. Intelligent physical robot use in the health care context leads to both non–health-related consequences (emotional outcomes, attitude and evaluation outcomes, and behavioral outcomes) and consequences for (physical, mental, and social) health promotion for individual users. Accordingly, an integrative framework was proposed to obtain an overview of the antecedents and consequences of intelligent physical robot use in the health care context. Conclusions This study contributes to the literature by summarizing current knowledge in the field of intelligent physical robot use in health care, by identifying the antecedents and the consequences of intelligent physical robot use, and by proposing potential future research agendas in the specific area based on the research findings in the literature and the identified knowledge gaps.

Robotics forms an integral part of industry 4.0, the industrial revolution of the 21st century. This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of Web of Science (WoS) indexed publications addressing this emerging field from 2011 till June 2022. WoS research publications were firstly analysed along multiple verticals such as annual counts, types, publishing sources, research directions, researchers, organizations, and countries. Next, co-authorship collaborations among authors, organizations, and countries were discovered. This was followed by an analysis of co-occurring keywords related to robotics in industry 4.0. Finally, a detailed citation analysis was carried out to unearth citation linkages among authors, institutions, documents, nations, and journals. Latest trends, under-investigated topics, and future directions are also discussed. Primary results indicate that more than 3000 articles are being published annually in this emerging field, with a total of 18,893 documents published in WoS during the last decade. The 'IEEE Access', Chinese Academy of Science, Wang Y. (USA), and the USA emerged as the topmost productive journal, institution, author, and nation. Porpiglia Francesco (Italy), Chinese Academy Science and USA obtained the highest co-authorship total link strength (TLS); whereas Lee Chengkuo (Singapore), China, Chinese Academy Science, and the IEEE Access scored the highest citation TLS among authors, countries, organizations, and sources respectively. Machine learning (ML) emerged as the highest co-occurring keyword, followed by artificial intelligence (AI). Computer Science emerged as the most trending research domain, followed by general applications. In the future, ML and AI will advance more sophisticated robots in industry 4.0 systems.

Robots for Elderly Care: Review, Multi-Criteria Optimization Model and Qualitative Case Study

This paper focuses on three areas: the first is a review of current knowledge about social and service robots for elderly care. The second is an optimization conceptual model aimed at maximizing the efficiency of assigning robots to serve the elderly. The proposed multi-criteria optimization model is the first one proposed in the area of optimization for robot assignment for the elderly with robot utilization level and caregiver stress level. The third is the findings of studies on the needs, requirements, and adoption of technology in elderly care. We consider the use of robots as a part of the ENRICHME project for long-term interaction and monitoring of older persons with mild cognitive impairment, to optimize their independence. Additionally, we performed focus group discussions (FGD) to collect opinions about robot-related requirements of the elderly and their caregivers. Four FDGs of six persons were organized: two comprising older adults, and two of the other formal and informal caregivers, based on a detailed script. The statements of older participants and their caregivers were consistent in several areas. The analysis revealed user characteristics, robot-related issues, functionality, and barriers to overcome before the deployment of the robot. An introduction of the robot must be thoroughly planned, include comprehensive pre-training, and take the ethical and practical issues into account. The involvement of future users in the customization of the robot is essential.
