<p>In this research, two 1.5-L activated sludge (AS)-sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were seeded with return activated sludge (RAS) and operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 72-hr to enable nitrification of centrate with an ammonia-nitrogen (NH -N)3concentration of 572 ± 28 mg/L. Secondly, three 1.2-L aerobic granular sludge (AGS)-SBRs were each operated at a 12-hr followed by an 8-hr HRT to cultivate aerobic granules from RAS. The AGS-SBRs were fed with a combination of diluted and synthetic centrate to perform nitrification only and simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND). NH3-N removal efficiencies in the AS-SBR operated with supplemental alkalinity was 100 ± 0% (26 to 93 day), while the control AS-SBR that operated th nd without supplemental alkalinity achieved 61 ± 2% (18 to 52 day) due to incomplete nitrification. The AGS-SBRs fed with diluted centrate, synthetic centrate, and diluted centrate with supplemental organic carbon displayed average NH -N 3emoval efficiencies of 93 ± 19%, 94 ± 16%, and 92 ± 9%, respectively.</p>

Abstract. Bacteria responsible for ammonia oxidization (AOB) can be differed into two groups which have different bio kinetic parameters. Those groups are slow growing bacteria with lower half saturation coefficient for NH4 (k -strategist) and fast growing bacteria with higher half saturation coefficient for NH4 (r-strategist). By controlling operational conditions of process it is possible to create dominance of one of those colonies to enhance the nitrification rate. Therefore model of sequencing bath reactor was developed to study the correlation of bioaugmentation of the side stream breeder reactor and predominant AOB culture. The course of the study was to find the minimal bioaugmentation influent of AOB rich recycled sludge to create dominance of k-strategist in the side stream reactor with maintaining maximal possible increase of overall AOB load. In addition operating conditions like sludge retention time, NH4 concentration and loading regimes was investigated to determine the optimum for the process.

Bioaugmentation is a proposed technique to improve nutrient removal in municipal wastewater treatment. Compared with commonly used nitrification/denitrification (NDN) processes, bioaugmentation may be able to reduce tankage or land requirements. Many approaches for bioaugmentation have been developed, but few studies have compared the benefits among different approaches. This paper quantifies the effectiveness of bioaugmentation processes and investigates three major ''onsite'' bioaugmentation alternatives: 1) the parallel-plants approach, which uses acclimated biomass grown in a nitrifying ''long-SRT'' (sludge retention time) plant to augment a low-SRT treatment plant; 2) the enricher-reactor approach, which uses an offline reactor to produce the augmentation cultures; and 3) the enricher-reactor/return activated sludge (ER-RAS) approach, which grows enrichment culture in a reaeration reactor that receives a portion of the recycle activated sludge. Kinetic models were developed to simulate each approach, and the benefits of various approaches are presented on the same basis with controllable parameters, such as bioaugmentation levels, aeration tank volume, and temperatures. Examples were given to illustrate the potential benefits of bioaugmentation by upgrading a ''carbon-only'' wastewater treatment plant to nitrification. Simulation results suggested that all bioaugmentation approaches can decrease the minimum SRT for nitrification. The parallelplants approach creates the highest concentration of biomass but may fail at too low temperature. The ER-RAS approach likely would be more useful at lower temperature and required less reactor volume; enricherreactor approach would likely be more advantageous in the presence of inhibitory compound(s).
