Nutrients removal and biomass production from anaerobic digested effluent by microalgae: A review

Abstract: This article summarizes the recent progress of nutrient removal from wastewater via microalgae. Removal of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds from wastewater are of great importance, while those compounds are suitable for growth of some microalgae species. Such a combination provides more opportunities for anaerobic digestion facilities, which are producing large amount of wastewater with high nitrogen and phosphorous contents. However, in order to optimize and maximize the performance and durability of the nu… Show more

“…On the other hand, these elements are essential for microalgae production [37]. Nitrogen sources such as nitrate, nitrite and ammonia are absorbed by different pathways that converge on the GS-GOGAT cycle for the production of amino acids and ultimately other nitrogenated metabolites [38,39]. Additionally, phosphorus is absorbed as soluble phosphate, in the form of hydrogen phosphate and dihydrogen phosphate, which is further directed to the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), nucleic acids, phospholipids and coenzymes [38].…”

“…There was still a considerable gap between the production system and the scale of energy crop planting, even though China became the third-largest bioethanol production country following the USA and Brazil. The government should take measures to support research on motor biofuel production technology and the industrialization of motor biofuel, such as the selection of biological resources, biofuel processing technology, and research on technology using cellulose to produce liquid fuel [66,71,72] . The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the State Forestry Administration of the People's Republic of China should encourage the breeding and promotion of energy crops and oil plants.…”

“…The rapid increase in of worldwide consumption of fossil fuels has led to serious environmental consequences, such as emission of greenhouse gases and water pollution (Stern et al, 2016). In order to contain such environmental risks and overcome a possible future energy shortage, alternative clean and renewable energy sources have attracted considerable attention (Li et al, 2019a). Although studies on renewable energies have focussed on solar, wind, and hydropower, the use of biodiesel has gained considerable attention among the scientific community due to its energy density, thermal efficiency (Manigandan et al, 2020a), and relatively simple integration into present transport technology.…”
