“…When compared with a previously validated QFFQ in the Caribbean (Jackson et al 2001, Sharma et al 1996, 2007a, the present QFFQ revealed several food items unique to Trinidad. The preparation methods and nutrient composition of foods listed in the previous QFFQ (Ramdath et al 2010) differ significantly, thus requiring the creation and validation of a separate QFFQ as suggested by Cade et al (2004). “…Collecting weighed recipes to determine the calculated nutritional composition was an alternative method of choice. Research comparing the two methods reported positive correlations, especially for macronutrient data, and a substantial number of studies use this weighted method (Sharma et al, 2007a(Sharma et al, ,b, 2008(Sharma et al, , 2009Ramdath et al, 2011). Minor variations in vitamin values may have occurred because we were unable to account for vitamin losses that could have occurred during cooking.…”

“…They can be prepared at home or at a restaurant, or they can represent industrially processed foods. To preserve the cultural elements by providing the related dietary information, many researchers have paid special attention to the study of the nutritional characteristics of traditional foods and recipes over the last decade [5][6][7][8][9][10]; traditional foods are in fact key elements in the dietary patterns of a country. Ramdath et al [7] have studied the nutritional composition of commonly consumed dishes in Trinidad to determine the associations between diet and the risk of chronic diseases.…”
