Silicon can increase the natural defence of plants against stresses including herbivorous insects. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is one of the forms of silicon, and despite its wide use in the industrial sector, its use in agriculture is still poorly adopted. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of foliar application of SiO2 in inducing defence against Spodoptera frugiperda in soybean. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomised design with four treatments (0%, 1%, 2.5%, and 5% of SiO2). The effect on cannibalism, biological parameters (mortality, duration of the larval stage, duration of the pupal stage and pupal weight) and wear on the mandible of S. frugiperda were evaluated. The foliar silicon content was also determined. The supply of SiO2 prolonged the duration of the larval and pupal stages of the S. frugiperda by 0.56 and 0.17 days for each 1% of SiO2 applied, respectively. The use of SiO2 at 5% increased the mortality rate of caterpillars in the larval stage by approximately 25%. There was no effect of SiO2 application on cannibalism and weight of S. frugiperda pupae. There was wear on the caterpillars' jaws in the third and fourth instar at the highest SiO2 concentration. The application of SiO2 promoted greater accumulation of silicon in soybean leaves. It is concluded that the foliar application of SiO2 affects the biological performance of S. frugiperda through the induction of defence in the soybean crop and presents itself as a promising strategy in integrated pest management programmes.

The simultaneous analysis of the maximum number of chemical elements present in plant tissues provides more comprehensive information about their chemical constitution and increases the number of characteristics for the selection process in various plant breeding programs. The objective of this study was to analyze productivity, grain yield, and concentration of chemical elements in tissues of Coffea canephora clones to study phenotypic diversity and estimate genetic parameters for use in breeding. This experiment was carried out in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, in randomized blocks with four replications. The concentrations of elements in various organs were quantified using total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). Genetic parameters and genetic divergence were estimated, and genotypes were clustered using the UPGMA hierarchical method and non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis. The study allowed us to differentiate the performance of the clones in terms of the absorption of essential and non-essential chemical elements for plant development and to analyze the correlation of the characteristics in the selection process. TXRF efficiently characterizes the presence and concentration of multiple elements, aiding genotype discrimination for C. canephora improvement.

O amendoim é uma planta de importância socioeconômica mundial. A acidez natural e o baixo teor de nutrientes, como o fósforo, nos solos brasileiros limitam a produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de amendoim submetido a doses de silicato (0, 25, 50 e 100% necessidade de silicatagem) e P2O5 (0, 40, 80 e 160 kg ha-1). Cultivou-se amendoim cultivar BRS 151 por um ciclo em tubos de PVC (0,15 x 0,30 m). Analisou-se altura de parte aérea, diâmetro de caule, massa fresca e seca de parte aérea e estimou-se a produção do amendoinzeiro, através da relação entre o peso de grãos, número de grãos por vagem, número de vagens por planta e número de plantas por tubo. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste Tukey e análise de regressão a 5% de probabilidade. O silicato elevou o pH, reduziu o teor de alumínio e beneficiou o desenvolvimento da cultura, especialmente quando associado as doses de P2O5. A aplicação de 100% da necessidade de silicatagem e 80 kg ha-1 de P2O5 se elevou a produção de amendoim.
