Observations from PEMS testing of combustion engines of different applications

Abstract: The article compares data obtained in road tests with the latest legislative proposals relating to various applications of internal combustion engines. Passenger car emission tests have been performed several times on the same test route in accordance with the RDE procedure guidelines, for which a dozen or so criteria must be met, including the distance of each of the drive sections, their in the drive time and the dynamic characteristics of the drive. The analysis was also based on a two-dimensional operating… Show more

“…Sport mode significantly increases carbon monoxide emissions, most likely by increasing the torque and power output. None of the trips even comes close to the limit contained in the standards, which is confirmed by the authors' previous research in the study of carbon monoxide emissions [7,8,13]. The next analysis concerned the emission of hydrocarbons (Fig.…”

“…The number of amenities is particularly high in luxury vehicles, often doubling the original purchase price. The assembled device needs electricity to power it, which increases the load on the internal combustion engine by taking power from the crankshaft and converting the mechanical work into the electric energy in the alternator [1,5,8]. It is often associated with the use of starter batteries with increased capacity or increasing their number.…”

“…A further big step in the EU regulation was the control of vehicles on the road with portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) during real-driving emissions (RDE) testing [5][6][7][8]. On-board vehicle testing requires small, lightweight instruments and consequently the technical requirements of the laboratory grade equipment were relaxed for PEMS.…”
