Observations of imposed ordered structures in a dusty plasma at high magnetic field

Abstract: Dusty plasmas have been studied in argon, rf glow discharge plasmas at magnetic fields up to 2 T, where the electrons and ions are strongly magnetized. In this experiment, plasmas are generated between two parallel plate electrodes where the lower, powered electrode is solid and the upper, electrically floating electrode supports a semi-transparent, titanium mesh. We report on the formation of an ordered dusty plasma, where the dust particles form a spatial structure that is aligned to the mesh. We discuss pos… Show more

“…The dynamics of a dust particle pair also showed a pronounced response to magnetic fields of this magnitude [13]. Experiments performed at the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment (MDPX) at Auburn University [14] further demonstrate that ordered structures of a titanium mesh can be imposed on the dust particles under these conditions. Crystalline and strongly coupled fluid states [15,16] also occur naturally in dusty plasmas due to the strong Coulomb interaction between the grains.…”

“…Unlike the case of striation under identical conditions, the omega vector is directed opposite to the magnetic induction. The absolute value of the angular velocity is record‐breaking among all we know from the literature about structure rotation in strong magnetic fields …”

“…A number of studies have identified several physical phenomena associated with the dusty structures, their geometry, their dynamics in a magnetic field, and the ordering of particles. Nowadays, studies of dusty plasmas in magnetic fields continue, and the magnetic field magnitude range has been sufficiently widened . And the higher range of magnetic induction is a subject of certain interest of current research.…”

“…Today, there are several works in which the dusty plasma was studied in strong magnetic field. Since, where authors reported about instability of the dc discharge and its influence on dusty plasma, there was a number of works performed in the conditions of rf discharge in magnetic field up to 2 × 10 4 G . In recent work, it was succeeded to create the dusty plasma in the conditions of the stratified glow discharge in a whole diapason of moderate magnetic field in neon.…”
