“…or anti-E, when they are very weak (indirect antiglobulin titre about 1 in 4) bring about only very slow red-cell destruction, with a half-time of the order of four or five days (Case 8 of Mollison and Cutbush, 1955; Case 15 of Cutbush and Mollison, 1958). On the other hand, incomplete antibodies which bind complement and have a titre at 370 C. of only 1 in 4 may bring about removal of a proportion of injected red cells with a half-time of a few minutes.…”

“…28, 19591124Nov. 28, 1959 BLOOD GROUPS AND RED-CELL DESTRUCTION (Mollison and Cutbush, 1955;Cutbush and Mollison, 1958). What is difficult is to find cases in which the antibody is inactive at 370 C. in vitro but is active at some slightly lower temperature, such as 330 C., so as to discover as precisely as possible the relationship between thermal range of activity in vitro and activity in vivo.…”

“…Cutbush et al [6] have shown upon 13 Rh antiserums that with only one exception all Rh antiserums used to the sensitization of the erythrocytes behaved like pure gamma globulins. By the immunoelectrophoretic analysis of anti-mouse serum it was found out that it contains a great quantity of antibodies against the mouse and rat gamma globulin, the anti bodies against the human and guinea-pig gamma globulin were not proved.…”

“…It is founded on the supposition that the antibodies can be bound on the surface of erythrocytes without exerting their agglutination. The ag glutination of thus sensitized erythrocytes takes place when the anti globulin serum is added. It is well known that incomplete Rh antibodies are to be found in the gamma globulin fraction of the serum [4,5,6,7]. For the detection of Rh (anti-D) isoantibodies we use antiglobulin sera prepared by the immunization of animals with human serum.…”

“…In this type of IA reaction the globulin coating the red cell surface acts as antigen with the heterologous antibody in the Coombs serum. The major portion of the coating material which can be eluted from sensitized red cells appears to migrate electrophoretically with the gamma globulin fraction of the plasma proteins although alpha and beta globulins also may be found in the same eluate (14)(15)(16). After ultracentrifugation, the gamma globulins are present both in the 7S fraction and in the 19S fraction (17) suggesting that these materials constitute a somewhat heterogeneous group.…”
