Observations on byssus systems in the spat of Cerastoderma glaucum and C. edule

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONYonge (1962) suggests a possible universal occurrence of byssal apparatus in the post-larval spat of bivalves. Subsequent studies have revealed that the byssus thread secreted by the post-larval byssal apparatus of many bivalves is involved in settlement as well as migration by means of bysso-pelagic drifting (Sigurdsson, Titman & Davis, 1976; Blok & Tan-Maas, 1977; Board, 1983). Recent studies on the byssus and other foot glands in the early stages of bivalves have included Ostrea edulis (… Show more

“…This is consistent with many studies in other marine bivalves and gastropods (Sigurdsson et al 1976, d e Blok & Tan-Mass 1977, Lane et al 1982, 1985, Board 1983, Yankson 1986, Cummings et al 1993, Hooker 1995. Sigurdsson et al (1976) f~rst reported the production of drifting threads in at least 20 species of young postlarval bivalve molluscs and termed this mechanism 'byssus drifting' The thread can play an important role in pelagic drifting by directly increasing viscous drag (Sigurdsson et al 1976, Lane et al 1985.…”

“…Production of a drifting thread is common in many benthic invertebrates, including bivalves, gastropods and polychaetes (Butman 1987). Although there have been several laboratory and field studies on the drifting behavior of bivalve postlarvae (Lane et al 1985, Yankson 1986, Beukema & de Vlas 1989, Armonies 1992, Hooker 1995, the effects of environmental factors on the occurrence of this behavior are relatively little studied.…”

“…The byssus system of cockle Cerastoderma edule spat has only recently been studied (Yankson 1986). Nevertheless, Baggermann suggested as early as 1953 that juveniles of this species have a prolonged pelagic dispersal phase.…”

“…This is particularly true for some mollusc species, which are known to build an assisting device for drifting in the water column. In marine bivalves, thin mucus threads many times the length of the animal increase the hydrodynamic drag on the organisms and enable them to be lifted and transported in the water column by currents (Sigurdsson et al 1976, Yankson 1986, Beukema & d e Vlas 1989. In larger specimens buoyancy may b e enhanced by an extreme protrusion and swelling of the foot (Sorlin 1988).…”

“…Transport during secondary dispersal of the much bigger postlarvae (spat of a few mm length) is facilitated by a long thread that increases viscous drag, thus enabling the young bivalves to be carried along on relatively weak currents (Sigurdsson et al 1976, Lane et al 1985, Yankson 1986). Such threads appear to be a common feature in marine molluscs (Sigurdsson e t al.…”
