Observations on Sahli's Hæmoglobinometer

Abstract: The past two decades has been a period of intensive and fruitful research on the atiology, diagnosis and treatment of the anemias. Although diagnostic methods have been extended and elaborated, research has served also to confirm the fundamental value of accurate determination of the haemoglobin content (Hb) of the blood. Routine estimation of the Hb has revealed the fallacy of assuming that pale people are necessarily anemic; it has also discovered many cases of undoubted anaemia among those who pride themsel… Show more

“…Fieldwork teams were trained to measure height (to 1 mm; stadiometer), weight (to 0·1 kg; electronic scales, calibrated daily) and finger-prick haemoglobin 15 . Blood and faecal samples were collected for central retinol assay 16 and central formalin-ether-concentration helminth egg assay 17 (useable only after mid-study, when egg-counting methodology greatly improved).…”

“…Haematological parameters : Blood haemoglobin level was determined according to the Sahli's method 13 . Haematological parameters, i.e ., red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and platelet were measured by automated haematology analyzer (KX-21, Sysmex, Japan).…”
