Observing severe precipitation near complex topography during the Yilan Experiment of Severe Rainfall in 2020 (YESR2020)

Abstract: This study introduces a recent field experiment investigating multiscale terrain–circulation–precipitation interactions. When a synoptic‐scale northeasterly wind prevails under the active East Asian winter monsoon, stratocumulus cloud decks with severe rainfall exceeding 100 mm·day−1 frequently occur in the northeastern plain area and adjacent mountains in Yilan, Taiwan. The Yilan Experiment of Severe Rainfall (YESR2020) is a field campaign from November 20, 2020, to November 24, 2020, to survey the physical p… Show more

“…The ST mini‐radiosonde is a compact, light‐weight, economical, and well‐calibrated sensor (Hwang et al., 2020), and it has been utilized in the Yilan Experiment of Severe Rainfall (YESR2020) field campaign (S.‐H. Su et al., 2022). An observation was conducted on 26 August 2022.…”

“…They hypothesized that the enhanced precipitation efficiency observed in the mesoscale convective system was ascribed to the enriched accretion growth of rain at the lower levels embedded with surplus water content. Recently, the microphysical processes of severe wintertime rainfall over Yilan county in East Taiwan were analyzed using ground-based radar during the YESR2020 (Yilan Experiment of Severe Rainfall 2020) field campaign conducted in November 2020 30 .…”
