Obstetric triage improvement process using the Donabedian model of quality care: a quality improvement initiative

Abstract: Obstetric triage has become one of the most crucial innovations in the field of perinatal care in the past 15 years. In lower- middle- income countries (LMICs), the pregnant patients are seen in a conventional way based on the time of their arrival; this divergent, unbalanced and inequitable approach results in delayed initial evaluation, prolonged length of stay (LOS) and affected clinical outcomes. This project aimed at implementing an effective and efficient obstetric triage system with improved throughput a… Show more

“…Innovations most commonly consisted of new structures (37.1%; n=26), which typically included novel policies (eg, family presence policy32) and novel practitioner roles (eg, patient navigator to enhance patient–provider communication33, in-house transplant co-ordinator dedicated to organ procurement34). Other examples included the establishment of new units (eg, delirium and surveillance unit35) and reorganisation of existing hospital processes (eg, restructuring of radiology transport36, redesign of obstetric triage system37).…”

“…Personnel refers to agents or items in the structure responsible for carrying out the required activity. The structure is defined as a setting in which healthcare is provided (e.g., facilities, equipment, numbers, and the qualifications of personnel) [25,26]. Based on the conceptualisations of the findings of the study, the following stakeholders were involved in the nominal group technique, such as midwives, traditional birth attendants, the Director of the National Directorate of Traditional Medicine, policymakers, labour organisations, and representatives from sub-Saharan countries.…”

“…The obstetric nurses' knowledge and practices can improve obstetric triage efficacy and efficiency if properly conducted. Training is one of the important educational methods, especially for the health-related professional team (Naz et al, 2022). So, the researchers are interested in identifying the effect of educational program on maternity nurses' knowledge and practices regarding obstetric triage.…”
