Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common medical condition that occurs in approximately 5% to 15% of the population. The pathophysiology of OSA is characterized by repetitive occlusions of the posterior pharynx during sleep that obstruct the airway, followed by oxyhemoglobin desaturation, persistent inspiratory efforts against the occluded airway, and termination by arousal from sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with daytime sleepiness and fatigue, likely due to fragmented sleep from recurrent arou… Show more

“…3 Previous studies have suggested that OSAS acts as an independent risk factor and leads to hypertension, heart disease, and stroke through the mechanisms described above. [4][5][6] OSAS can have a similar effect on the eye. According to some reports, the prevalence of primary open-angle glaucoma is increased in patients with OSAS.…”

“…The incidence of OSA is approximately 4 % in adult population (2). OSA is an important health problem that is associated with several diseases including hypertension (HT), obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3). Several factors have been proposed for the relationship between OSA and cardiovascular risk factors.…”
