OCam with CCD220, the Fastest and Most Sensitive Camera to Date for AO Wavefront Sensing

Abstract: International audienceFor the first time, subelectron readout noise has been achieved with a camera dedicated to astronomical wavefront-sensing applications. The OCam system demonstrated this performance at a 1300 Hz frame rate and with 240 x 240 pixel frame size. ESO and JRA2 OPTICON jointly funded e2v Technologies to develop a custom CCD for adaptive optics (AO) wavefront-sensing applications. The device, called CCD220, is a compact Peltier-cooled 240 x 240 pixel frame-transfer eight-output back-illuminated … Show more

“…The focal length of L4 and L5 is 608 mm and 52 mm, respectively and the effective aperture size of L4 and L5 is 56 mm and 12 mm respectively. The EMCCD is an 240 × 240 pixel OCAM2 camera with a 24 μm pixel size manufactured by FirstLight Company 22,23 . It can operate at 1500 Hz with a readout noise lower than 1 e − .…”

“…Indeed for this application, several 100s of Hz of framerate are necessary with a good readout noise at the same time. Our team worked a lot on the improvements of visible cameras for wavefront sensing with the OCAM² which is to date the fastest and lowest noise camera, tailored for this application [5] [6].…”

“…Error budget computations and E2E simulations led us to the selection of the OCAM2k as new WFS detector. This camera is produced by First Light Imaging and is the latest version of the OCam [4]. It hosts an electron multiplied CCD chip (E2V CCD220) of 240x240 pixels of 24μm side.…”
