Occlusal interferences in retruded contact position and temporomandibular joint sounds

Abstract: In 193 non-patient adolescents, unilateral contacts in retruded contact position (RCP) were seen more often in girls than in boys (P < 0.001) and were more frequent in subjects with than without general joint instability (P < 0.05). A negative correlation (r = -0.70***) was found between the side of the temporomandibular joint sound and the side of unilateral contact in RCP. Boys with unilateral contacts in RCP had more non-reciprocal clicking than girls. No signs were found indicating that a unilateral contac… Show more

“…In the present study, the frequencies of unilateral contact in the RCP for both the pain patients and the clicking patients showed similar values to other studies (Egermark‐Eriksson, Carlsson & Magnusson, 1987; Pullinger et al ., 1993; Westling, 1995). Although Egermark‐Eriksson et al .…”

“…Rosenthal and Burch (1975) showed three basic patterns related to occlusal interferences and illustrated the site of muscle tenderness on the occlusal interference side. Up to the present only a few studies concerned with the relation between the symptomatic side and the occlusal interference side have been published (Linde & Isacsson, 1990; Westling, 1995).…”

“…It is also not recommended to draw conclusions on the aetiology of TMJ pathology from these parameters. There was no statistically significant association with clicking and joint tenderness according to the length and symmetry of the RCP–ICP slide or unilateral contact in RCP (Pullinger et al ., 1988Westling, 1995). The Angle classes or a crossbite malocclusion were not significant factors in the development of TMJ symptoms (Butler, Folke & Bandt, 1975; Grosfeld & Czarnecka, 1977; Lieberman et al ., 1985).…”

“…Excessive load on the masticatory system due to occlusal instability eventually gives rise to temporomandibular damage. The influence of occlusion on the onset of TMD is debated and still a source of controversy [10][11][12][13][14]. The detailed, exhaustive study of these factors will help in furthering the knowledge on the possible existence of the association.…”
