Occupational exposure to electric fields and currents associated with 110 kv substation tasks

Abstract: The main aim of this study was to investigate occupational exposure to electric fields, and current densities and contact currents associated with tasks at air-insulated 110 kV substations and analyze if the action value of EU Directive 2004/40/EC was exceeded. Four workers volunteered to simulate the following tasks: Task (A) maintenance of an operating device of a disconnector at ground or floor level, Task (B) maintenance of an operating device of a circuit breaker at ground or floor level, Task (C) breaker… Show more

“…In our earlier articles, we measured occupational electric field exposure in different tasks at 400 and 110 kV substations and compared our results to guidelines [Korpinen et al, 2009, 2011a, b, 2012a]. We typically performed measurements when the sun was shining and did not note the impact of humidity on the measured values.…”

“…When performing the measurements of occupational electric field exposure in different tasks at 400 and 110 kV substations, as described in our earlier articles [Korpinen et al, 2009, 2011a, b, 2012a], the weather was typically sunny and never rainy. We also calculated the relative humidity and temperature during those measurements.…”

“…However, power system practitioners are inevitably exposed to complex electric fields because they have to work close to high-voltage electrical equipment. If the practitioners can be equipped with a portable safety protection instrument that can measure the electric field intensity in the working area in real time and issue safety warnings, their safety and health could be ensured [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In this paper, a portable protection instrument is designed for the practitioners.…”

“…The highest maximum average current density in the neck was 1.8 mA/m 2 (calculated internal electric field 9.0–18.0 mV/m) and the highest contact current was 79.4 mA in the task ‘Maintenance of an operating device of a circuit breaker from a service platform. '[ 5 ]…”
