Occupational exposure to hexachlorocyclohexane

Abstract: In a lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane)-producing factory 54 male workers (mean age 40 years, mean duration of exposure 8 years) were studied with regard to their blood levels of testosterone, LH, and FSH. Twenty clerks of nearly the same age were examined for control purposes in the same way. Serum-LH concentrations of the exposed workers were significantly higher than in controls. Geometric mean values were 8.8 mIU/ml and 5.7 mIU/ml respectively. On the other hand, FSH levels were insignificantly higher. … Show more

“…Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDE) for example is a potent androgen antagonist [ 152 ] suppressing spermatogenic epithelium in humans [ 153 ]. Lindane increases LH, FSH, and decreases testosterone but also can accumulate in the testes, impairing germinal epithelium and Sertoli cell function [ 154 ]. Exposure to environmental estrogens (Chlordecone) increases the risk of prostate cancer [ 155 ].…”

“…However, knowledge of its effects on human health is limited and controversial and in many cases the evidence is based only on studies of workers employed in the production and use of lindane [5]. The most frequently reported effects are related to neurological disorders [6,7], endocrine disruption [8,9], reproductive disorders [10,11], cardiovascular effects [12] and cancer [13,14].…”
