Occupational safety measures and morbidity among welders in Vellore, Southern India

Abstract: Background: Welders in the unorganized occupational sector in the economically developing world are exposed to respiratory, skin, eye, ear, and neurological problems exacerbated by non-usage of personal protective equipment (PPE). Objective: To study the frequency of health problems and the usage of PPE among welders in unorganized welding units in Vellore, India. “…In this work, solderers have been included in the industrial sector, without precise data, but it is demonstrated that they are at high occupational risk of eye injury. This is similar to the findings of Alexander et al (11). They can be considered a target group for enforcing the future use of PPE.…”

“…Employees such as solderers, with a high risk of injury to eyes, skin and hearing, usually work without formal prevention training, and they are not aware of the existing safety protocols (11). In this work, solderers have been included in the industrial sector, without precise data, but it is demonstrated that they are at high occupational risk of eye injury.…”

“…33,37 In this study, it was established that workers with more than 5 years of work experience were less likely to have sustained occupational injuries. These findings are similar to those found in studies conducted in Northern Nigeria and southern India 11,38 and this has been attributed to the appropriate use of PPE as a result of previous exposure to injuries and hazard awareness amongst the experienced welding workers. 27,39 Supportive supervision should be provided to inexperienced workers in order to ensure guidance and knowledge sharing on issues related to occupational safety.…”

“…Near vision defects (39.4%) were significantly higher than other studies. 7 Abnormal ECG findings were comparable with other studies. PSA levels were studied for the first time in these workers but negligible percentage (0.9%) had high PSA levels.…”
