Abstract: Evidence supports tailored interventions designed to enhance IADL performance. More studies are needed that focus on IADLs specifically and that use IADLs in their interventions.

“…Among the participants with AD, MCI, and healthy older adults, reduced executive performance has been particularly associated with poorer IADLs, 35,36 and interventions to improve executive functions have been suggested as a means to increase independence. 37 In PD, memory, executive function, processing speed, language, and visuospatial skills have been variably associated with complex IADLs, 10,11,38 although other studies that evaluate performance-based methods of IADL assessment have found no relationship between cognition and functional performance in participants with PD. 3,39 Here, we provide support for associations with both cognitive diagnosis and individual cognitive tests, particularly processing speed and working memory.…”

“…This article provided an example of how to apply evidence from systematic reviews on productive aging to inform and guide clinical decision making (Berger et al, 2018;Elliott & Leland, 2018;Hunter & Kearney, 2018;Liu et al, 2018;Smallfield & Lucas Molitor, 2018a, 2018b. “…For example, Cooper found that OT for adults with cancer reduced stress and increased sense of control, allowing for better management of psychosocial needs. OT services for older adults with other chronic conditions can decrease the likelihood of rehospitalization and use of skilled nursing services, and it was shown to improve functioning and confidence in participation in social life . De Groef and colleagues found that outpatient PT can improve physical health and decrease pain.…”

“…OT services for older adults with other chronic conditions can decrease the likelihood of rehospitalization and use of skilled nursing services, and it was shown to improve functioning and confidence in participation in social life. [46][47][48][49][50][51] De Groef and colleagues 52 found that outpatient PT can improve physical health and decrease pain. However, to our knowledge, ours is the first RCT to examine use of both OT and PT services for older adults with cancer and demonstrate clinical improvements in treatment groups, that is, the promise of the OT/PT team improving care.…”
