Occupational therapy treatment time during inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation

Abstract: Background: Occupational therapy (OT) is a critical component of the rehabilitation process after spinal cord injury (SCI), the constitution of which has not been studied or documented in full detail previously. Objective: To describe the type and distribution of SCI rehabilitation OT activities, including the amount of time spent on evaluation and treatment, and to discuss predictors (patient and injury characteristics) of the amount of time dedicated to OT treatment activities. Methods: Six inpatient rehabil… Show more

“…51,52 All independent variables were checked for colinearity, and if any pair was highly correlated (r > 0.75), only one of the pair was allowed to enter the models. The discipline-specific articles that follow in this series describe the intensity of specific activities/interventions provided by each treating discipline; [28][29][30][31][32][33][34] this article only addresses time for all therapeutic activities combined.…”

“…Similarly, the total time patients worked on power wheelchair mobility training was 19.2 minutes per week (12.9 with PT and 6.3 with OT) and on bed mobility the total time was 23.9 minutes (18.5 with PT and 5.4 with OT). 38 Reinforcement and repetition among both disciplines impact improvement in task performance and, thus, examining time spent by both disciplines is needed to obtain an accurate reflection of time and tasks that patients focus on during therapy sessions.…”

“…They entered these data into handheld personal digital assistants (PDAs) after each encounter with a patient. 9,10 The extent of each patient's participation during OT treatment sessions was quantified using the Pittsburgh Rehabilitation Participation Scale (PRPS), which defined a cluster of observable behaviors to serve as a surrogate for patient engagement. 19 PRPS scores from each OT session were averaged to calculate each patient's mean PRPS score over the entire stay.…”

“…For example, OTs spent more time with patients at C5-C8 levels of injury than any other patient group. 10 Whether the specific choice of intervention leads to the highest functional outcomes after SCI when compared with others is not yet clear. This article has two objectives.…”
