Octant sensitivity for large θ 13 in atmospheric and long-baseline neutrino experiments

Abstract: One of the unknown parameters in neutrino oscillation studies is the octant of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle θ 23 . In this paper, we discuss the possibility of determining the octant of θ 23 in the long baseline experiments T2K and NOνA in conjunction with future atmospheric neutrino detectors, in the light of non-zero value of θ 13 measured by reactor experiments. We consider two detector technologies for atmospheric neutrinosmagnetized iron calorimeter and non-magnetized Liquid Argon Time Projection… Show more

“…These experiments can also resolve the octant of θ 23 at 2σ C.L. provided sin 2 θ 23 ≤ 0.44 or ≥ 0.57 [30,31]. Hence, future facilities consisting of intense high-power beams and large smart detectors are inevitable to resolve these fundamental unknowns at high confidence level [32].…”

“…The combined data from the current ν e appearance experiments, T2K [23,24] and NOνA [25][26][27], can provide a hint at 90% confidence level for neutrino mass ordering [28,29] and at 95% confidence level for octant of θ 23 [30,31]. They can determine these quantities at > 99% C.L.…”

“…Clues toward formulating the general θ 23 −θ 13 −δ degeneracy have been given by many authors but within various approximations. For example, a formal degeneracy equation has been written down by Donini et al [23] under the θ 23 ↔ π/2 − θ 23 approximation, and by Chatterjee et al [24] under restriction to a part of the three-dimensional manifold. However, the full analytical structure of these degeneracies has not been revealed in a manner which is as general as that presented in this paper, nor have they ever been analyzed, imposing a clear discrimination between the degeneracies of the appearance and disappearance channels.…”
