Ocular coherence tomography image data of the retinal laminar structure in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy

Abstract: The data presented in this article are related to the research paper entitled “Norrin treatment improves ganglion cell survival in an oxygen-induced model of retinal ischemia” (Dailey et al., 2017) [1] This article describes treatment with the human Norrin protein, an atypical Wnt-protein, to improve the survival of retinal ganglion cells in a murine model of Oxygen-Induced Retinopathy (OIR). That study utilized Optical coherence tomography (OCT) to visualize retinal layers at high resolution in vivo, and to q… Show more

“…To view the entire span of the neural retina from the disc to the periphery, the stained sections were scanned using virtual microscopy (Dailey et al, 2017). While the progression of OIR induced laminar disorganization continued from age P21 to P42, some of the disorganization resolved by age P56 in both Norrin-treated and vehicle-treated OIR retinas (Dailey et al, 2017). Disruption in the laminar structure of the retina was most often located in the central half of the retina, and not the periphery, corresponding with the OIR-induced central avascular areas typical of the mouse OIR model.…”

“…Disruption in the laminar structure of the retina was most often located in the central half of the retina, and not the periphery, corresponding with the OIR-induced central avascular areas typical of the mouse OIR model. Disruption of the retinal layers involved displacement and mixing of photoreceptor nuclei with cell bodies of the inner nuclear retina (Dailey et al, 2017). …”

“…In contrast, the tweezers group had a significant thicker total retina via SD-OCT measurements, but not after H&E staining at 8 days. This could be explained by the fact that disruption of the retina can be generated during dissection, embedding, cutting, and staining for H&E ( Dailey et al, 2017 ). Especially, processing the samples of the filter group could be worse through the attached filter.…”

“…Family members should also be screened, given that asymptomatic pathogenic features are commonly present, and asymptomatic family members are often identified. In the future, we may also be able to directly change the health and regeneration of human retinal endothelial cells through the application of Norrin protein, a therapy currently in development . Above all, patients and their family members must be informed that FEVR is a progressive lifelong disease that will require regular monitoring.…”
