Ocular involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: SLE is a serious systemic condition that may first present with ocular manifestations. Thus, it is crucial for ophthalmologists to be equipped with the knowledge to detect and adequately treat the disorder to avoid vision/life-threatening complications. More research is needed to determine which therapy provides the best outcome for patients with limited side-effects.

“…As a consequence of DE, corneal scarring, ulceration and filamentary keratitis can occur as well as decreased visual acuity. 25 DED occurs in two peaks: the first in patients aged 20-30, and the second in those aged over 50. 10 136 Systemic Sclerosis (SSc): SSc is a rare, chronic, systemic connective tissue disease of unknown origin characterized by widespread small vessel vasculopathy, immune dysregulation with autoantibody production, and progressive fibrosis.…”

“…Secondary, immunemediated hematologic, renal, central nervous system, and cardiovascular complications occur frequently and contribute meaningfully to disease-related morbidity and mortality. 3 Ocular involvement occurs in up to one-third of patients with active SLE, [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] with the most frequent complications including keratoconjunctivitis sicca, episcleritis/scleritis, and lupus retinopathy. More extensive ischemic retinal 12 and choroidal vasculitis -the latter often presenting as serous retinal detachment, [13][14][15] are less common, but can be blinding and point to the potential presence of active systemic disease.…”
