OFDM channel estimation by singular value decomposition

Abstract: A new approach to low-complexity channel estimation in orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed. A lowrank approximation is applied to a linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimator that uses the frequency correlation of the channel. By using the singular-value decomposition (SVD) an optimal low-rank estimator is derived, where performance is essentially preservedeven for low computational complexities. A fixed estimator, with nominal values for channel correlation and signa… Show more

“…It is generally accepted that irrespective of the propagation medium, most commonly adopted communication protocols such as orthogonal frequencydivision multiplexing (OFDM) employing multilevel modulation schemes with non-constant amplitude (e.g. 16 QAM) generally require estimation and tracking of the fading channel parameters to perform coherent demodulation (Li et al 1998;Edfors et al 1998;Yang et al 2001). For particular modulation modalities, channel estimation is most commonly achieved by exploiting the correlation of the channel frequency response at different frequencies and times.…”

“…If channel estimation are not implemented, interchannel interference (ICI) occurs between adjacent sub-channels of OFDM. As a result of ICI, it is impossible to receive data by receiver correctly [3][4][5][6][7]. In order to estimate channel parameters at each subcarriers, least square (LS) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) algorithms can be used.…”

“…In [4], Edfords offer low rank channel estimation that is implemented to MMSE and compare this proposal with LS estimator using mean square error (MSE) and symbol error rate (SER) criterias. Also the performance of the LS and MMSE algorithm is compared in [5]. By considering these works it can be said that MMSE algorithm has better performance than LS algorithm.…”
