Off-centered Double-slit Metamaterial for Elastic Wave Polarization Anomaly

Abstract: The polarization anomaly refers to the polarization transition from longitudinal to shear modes along an equi-frequency contour of the same branch, which occurs only in some anisotropic elastic media, but the lack of natural materials exhibiting desired anisotropy makes its utilization impossible for potential novel applications. In this paper, we present a unique, non-resonant type elastic metamaterial made of off-centered, double-slit unit cells. We show that its wave polarization characteristics that determ… Show more

“…Furthermore, based on the FIB/SEM and energy dispersive X‐ray (EDX) analysis of the compact SRMs, the existence of the FC layer (partially or totally) within the SRM windings is confirmed. The presence of the flexible polymeric FC layer [ 51 ] in the windings helps to increase the flexibility of the SRMs causing higher plastic deformation before breakage and improving the fatigue behavior of the SRMs.…”

“…This phenomenon has been harnessed by researchers to show the possibility of beaming or steering elastic waves in specific directions [24,25] and is also of interest for the inverse problem of non-destructively identifying damage by monitoring elastic energy flow [27,28]. Recently, researchers have also observed the appearance of polarization anomalies because of substructural heterogeneities [29][30][31], where the typically slower S-waves propagate faster than the P-waves.…”
