A greenhouse experiment was conducted in the experimental farm station of plant pathology research institute during 2015 season at three times of application of biotic and a biotic elicitors, to evaluate the efficient antagonistic bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis, Serratia marcescens, Cyanobacterial strain Spirulina platensis and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita infecting tomato plants. Nematode reproduction, Plant growth characters, endogenous hormones, anti-nematocidal protein markers as response to induction of SAR in leaves was recorded. Data recorded that using Bacillus subtilis at the same application time of M. incognita recorded 86% and 88% reduction of root galls and egg masses respectively. All tested elicitors appeared significant reduction in nematode reproduction. Also data revealed that treated tomato plants with tested elicitors recorded more significant values of growth characters. This was the fact when being compared with those of non-treated plants. Moreover, data revealed that contents of both GA and IAA were markedly decreased in infected plants than that of healthy ones. At the same time, marked increases in the contents of JA and ABA were observed in infected plants as being compared with healthy ones. On the other hand, results showed different responses as regards the determined hormones due to the application of different used elicitors. On the other hand, the results appeared that, a new pattern of proteins were produced, as well as, different increasing in the density of bands according to the type of used elicitors and also to the time of application.

Graphical abstract Nursery cultivation is recognized globally as an intensive production system to support quality seedlings as well as to manage resources efficiently. Apart from other factors, potting media (PM) play a crucial role in determining the success of nursery cultivation. Worldwide, peat is the most commonly used substrate in PM because of its favorable physicochemical properties. However, due to ascending environmental and ecological concerns regarding the use of peat, a variety of new substrates have been used/tested by researchers/practitioners/growers as PM. Bark, coir pith, wood fiber, compost derived from various agro-residues, and vermicompost either alone or in combination are some of the commonly explored substrates and found to have the potential to replace peat to a greater extent. In lieu of availability, abundance, low cost, and no/low processing requirement, the use of agro-industrial residue (AIR) in the PM is the current trend. However, challenges associated with their adoption cannot be ignored. The present review is focused on providing collective information, scientific knowledge and detailed analysis of various AIR used in PM. The critical evidence-based review would help in developing a consistent approach for the identification, selection and characterization of a new renewable substrate. In addition, it would help in developing a rationale understanding of the practical and economic realities involved in the adoption of the same in PM. This study was conducted to evaluate some effects of hazelnut dried husk extract and husk compost on nematode infection and some plant parameters of tomato inoculated by mixed root-knot nematodes populations of Meloidogyne hapla and M. arenaria in pot experiment. The dried hazelnut husk obtained from after harvest were used. For both husk extract and husk compost treatment, 50 grams of hazelnut husk was used. Approximately 1000 second stage juveniles (J2) was inoculated to susceptible tomato cultivar (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Rio Grande). At the end of 8 weeks, the gall numbers on the root, number of the juveniles in the pot, plant fresh root weight and total plant fresh weight were measured. As result, the husk compost treated plants had lower gall on the root system and juvenile numbers in the pot soil by comparison with husk extract treatment. For plant growth parameters, the total plant fresh weight was significantly different for husk compost treatment. The all results seemed that the husk compost treatment has more effect on Meloidogyne spp. gall numbers than husk extract application on tomato.
