Old master paintings – A fruitful field of activity for analysts: Targets, methods, outlook

Abstract: Old master paintings -A fruitful field of activity for analysts: Targets, methods, outlook Natural products used by ancient artists as components of paintings on canvas and wood, on sculptures, for murals or illuminated manuscripts are presented as potential analytical targets. Analytical methods recommended so far for the identification of binders, inorganic pigments, and organic dyestuffs are reviewed with special emphasis on hyphenated techniques.

“…The migration time of the first main peak was 9.1 min and it corresponded predominantly to laccaic acid A. The mass spectrum obtained at the apex of this peak showed the presence of a dominant signal registered at m/z 536, corresponding to the pseudomolecular ion [ 2 ] proved the presence of laccaic acid E (the first peak can be attributed to the molecular depronated ion and the latter to the species with lost H 2 O or CO 2 fragments). The second peak observed on the electropherogram indicated Fig.…”

“…One of the great challenges in the preservation of old art objects is the investigation of the material composition used by the painters. 1,2 Color has always been an important element in the cultures of people all over the world. In the past, painters had to use natural dyes extracted from plant, animal or soil owing to the lack of synthetic dyes.…”

“…The main topic of the present review deals with the characterisation and identification of different binding media and is directed to CE (recent reviews [2][3][4] concentrated on other analytical techniques). Although CE is meanwhile well established in the analytical laboratory, its application to binder analysis is still not common.…”

“…Organic colorants and their derivatives, such as indigo and indirubin, are among the most important components of historical paintings and textiles [1,2]. However, indirubin is also known as the active ingredient of Danggui Longhui Wan, a traditional Chinese antileukemia medicine, which constitutes a mixture of 11 plants [3][4][5][6].…”
