Abstract:IUD use was not associated with PID in low-risk younger women, but in women > or =35 years, IUD use was associated with an increased risk of PID. The study also demonstrates an association between IUD use and complicated PID in women > or =35 years.
“…Though the women with tubo‐ovarian abscesses were significantly older than those with salpingitis, prolonged use of the same IUCD seemed still to be a risk for tubo‐ovarian abscess after adjusting for age. In IUCD users with PID age ≥ 35 years has been described as a risk factor, while a link to prolonged use was not as evident (11). IUCD insertion implies a risk for developing PID (2) and this has been used as an argument for not replacing an extracted IUCD with a new one when a patient is older than 40.…”
The current Medical Products Agency recommendation that a woman nearing the end of her reproductive phase can safely use the same IUCD for a period exceeding five years is challenged.
