Older married couples’ sexual expression: A dyadic latent class analysis

Abstract: Many older adults continue to engage in sexual behavior, most often in the context of long-term marriages. Prior studies have tended to examine older adults’ sexual behavior, desires and motivations separately. Thus, there remain considerable gaps in our understanding of the multifaceted-nature of older couples’ sexual expression. Using dyadic latent class analysis and data on 953 heterosexual couples in long-term marriages from Wave 2 of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), we describe… Show more

“…For example, besides age-related phenomena (e.g., illness), individual differences in interpersonal aspects such as loneliness (also in couples), attachment styles, and perceptions of providing and receiving daily emotional support have been identified to affect global RS and well-being in older age (e.g., Huo et al, 2019;Stokes, 2017). Similarly, narrow behaviors such as older couples' sexual expression affect facets such as sexual satisfaction (Warner & Lyons, 2020).…”

“…Compared with prior research that mostly used a single health behavior of one individual (Lee et al, 2009), LCA allows us to examine three behaviors of both couples simultaneously, as well as to identify the (dis)concordance of each behavior within the couple. LCA has been used in the analysis of dyadic data to identify the latent patterns of couples' communal activities/ emotions, such as advance care planning (Lee & Kim, 2022), sexual expression (Warner & Lyons, 2020), and religiosity (Upenieks et al, 2022). Second, we investigate the association between couples' health behavior patterns and subsequent risks of developing memory-related disorders.…”
