Olive oil abrogates acrylamide induced nephrotoxicity by modulating biochemical and histological changes in rats

Abstract: Acrylamide (ACR) is one of the most important contaminants occurring in foods heated at high temperatures. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective efficacy of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), a main component of the Mediterranean diet, against nephrotoxicity induced by ACR. Rats have received by gavage during 21 days either ACR (40 mg/kg body weight) or ACR-associated with EVOO (300 μl) or only EVOO (300 μl). Acrylamide induced nephrotoxicity as evidenced by an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA), h… Show more

“…Grouping was done as follows: Group I: Control, Group II: Restraint stress (keeping rats in mesh wire restrainer), Group III: Restraint stress + Alpha tocopherol -50mg/kg body weight /day by gavage) 8 and Group IV: Restraint stress + Ascorbic acid (100mg/kg body weight/day by gavage). 9 Rats were kept in stainless steel cages in a humidity and temperature-controlled room (22 ± 2°C) on a 12:12-h light-dark cycle and handled for 1 week before the start of the experiment.…”

“…October 2018 | Volume 6 | Issue 10 | Page 433 nephrotoxicity which may be related to the generation of free radicals, redox state imbalance, the marked oxidation of membrane lipids and proteins leading to the loss of kidney membrane integrity (Ghorbel et al, 2017). That the nephrotoxicity induced by drug is associated with acute renal damage and chronic kidney diseases (Kim and Moon, 2012).…”

“…It has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antihypertensive and vasodilatory effects in both animals and humans (14). The possible mechanism explaining the beneficial role of EVOO may be due to its contents of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) essentially oleic acid and polyphenols as reported by our previous studies (15,16). Data assessing the health effects of EVOO used as a dietary supplement after acrylamide treatment are lacking.…”
