Omics approaches to study juvenile hormone synthesis

Abstract: The juvenile hormones (JHs) are a family of insect acyclic sesquiterpenoids produced by the corpora allata (CA), a pair of endocrine glands connected to the brain. They are involved in the regulation of development, reproduction, behavior, caste determination, diapause, stress response, and numerous polyphenisms. In the post-genomics era, comprehensive analyses using functional ‘omics’ technologies such as transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics have increased our understanding of the activity of the minu… Show more

“…For this we treated 4 th instar nymphs of BPH with the LC 50 concentration of EB using systemic bioassays, and then collected early (5E), middle (5M) and late (5L) stage of 5 th instar nymph and 1-7 DAE female adults (DAE) for analysis. Quantitative PCR was then used to examine the expression of key genes previously implicated in the regulation of JH (35, 36).…”

“…A possible explanation is that signaling factors responsible for JH synthesis might be turned on specifically at Mid-PAE of female locusts upon 4-VA stimuli, such as GPCRs and transcription factors ( Bendena et al, 2020 ). Although there are only a few DEGs in the brain of females exposed to 4-VA, we cannot exclude the involvement of the central nerve system pathway by other regulatory mechanisms, for example, neurotransmitter release, or post-transcription regulation ( Nouzova et al, 2018 ). Further studies should elucidate detailed mechanisms of the linking between 4-VA and JH biosynthesis in female locusts.…”

“…In particular, in the recent decade, several analyses of the peptidome of the CA have been undertaken. Liu et al (2012) could assign a total of 41 ion masses present in the CC-CA complex of fifth instar Bombyx mori but no clear-cut candidate for a peptide that is only secreted by the Golgi of the CA was found in this or other (e.g., Nouzova et al, 2018b) mass spectrometric studies.…”
